How long to cook a hard boiled egg?

boil water, then boil the egg for 12 minutes

here are some ideas for hard-boiled eggs...

egg salad:
mash 3 eggs with 1/4c. mayo, 2 stalks of chopped celery, 1/4c. shredded cheddar cheese, 4 slices of 1" thick cucumber minced, chopped red onion, 1t of curry powder and salt and pepper to taste. Serve on a bun or your favorite bread with a bit of leattuce!

deviled eggs:
slice eggs in half lengthwise, scoop out the yolks, leaving a small "bowl". Mash egg YOLKS with 2T of mayo, 2 minced chives or green onion, a bit of red onion, salt and pepper to taste. Spoon yolks back into the egg "bowls", and sprinkle with a bit of curry. Serve with a sprig of parsley to garnish.

I cook hard boiled eggs in 7 minutes, full boil.... so you can go 8 minutes just to be sure, but 7 works for me.

Remember to cool the eggs immediately or you'll end up with a green ring around the yolk.

THIS WORKS PERFECT EVERY TIME!!!

Put eggs in a pot filled with cold water. (Fill about an inch above eggs)
Put burner on high heat until it reaches a rolling boil.
When it reaches that boil, lower the heat to a medium (or a little lower is fine, too)
Leave them in on medium heat for like 10-14 minutes
Take them out and place them in ice water (In a bowl) for like 10-20 minutes.
When they come out of the cold water, feel them in your hands and if they get warmer, put them back in.

Dye (If you want), Peel, and serve how you like them.

For hard boiled 10 min. uncovered. Sometimes they crack open and leak while cooking. A good way to prevent that and make perfect eggs every time is to bring them to a boil, then cover the pan and turn off the heat. Then let sit for 20 min. Then cool in cold water for 2 min. before peeling.

You have to keep coming back and checking on it. Once I see a small crack in atleast one of the eggs, thats when I know that it is ready.
