I thought it would be interesting to both myself and maybe others how long it took before you felt completely pain-free following surgery (if ever). I've got another post documenting my recovery from a L5-S1 partial discectomy and laminectomy this past Dec. But for the sake of this thread - I'm 10 weeks out and still have persistent pain in my right foot. For the most part I notice it when lying down and sometimes when sitting but so far it's tolerable (esp. w/ some ibuprofen). Surgeon says as long as it's intermittent he's not concerned. He also did not recommend an MRI. If it still is bothersome after another couple of months I should come back to see him.

It's been a couple of months since I've posted. I'm about 5 mos. post-op L5-S1 partial discectomy. The foot pain pretty much went away at 4.5 mos. Still have some sciatic pain in my right calf that reminRAB me if I do too much but overall I'm doing well. Keeping up with the at home PT exercises and walking are definite helps. Looking forward to a pain-free summer!

hi guys

6 months post op still sore have good days and bad days. But feel as if im getting stronger. Fingers crossed. Hope you guys are doing well!

hi there

Im post laminotomy L5/S1 now for 5 1/2 months still have pain around lower back and pain in left calf and pain in right buttock. feel fine sometimes sitting etc but as soon as i do something slightly strenuous the aches and pains come.

im only 24 and would like any ones input if this is normal post op, My Neuro doesnt seem too concerned as i had another MRI done and everything seemed fine!

Am i being impatient? how long till i can return to gym and feel normal again?

This condition really wears down on a person as well as their dignity! :(

yeah, im hoping to have more good day im nearly 7 months post op...sometimes its hard to motivate yourself, but im getting there...good luck..

Boy did I jinx myself. Post a couple of weeks ago that things were finally looking up and this week the nagging back ache came back and today the foot pain returned with avengence. Before it was only when I was lying down, now I get random shooting pains into my foot when walking or sitting. I can't think of anything specific I did. I didn't overdo anything, was keeping up on my PT exercises at home, and was walking. All I know is this sucks and as aggravating as it is for me, my poor wife has to continue picking up the bulk of the household duties, childcare duties, etc. This sucks :(

I feel the pain.....NEVER..say your ok... like kiRAB, it will come back and haunt you....you probably did it while you were alseep...get the really good heat patches, i use the brand Unten, lasts 12 hours (its the best brand) that helps.....all the best...

I had surgery last nov im on oxycontin and neurontin (for nerve damage) also endone im never pain free, its my lower back, knee and ankle, good luck

I had my laminectomy and fusion of my S1 and hardware placed on my L4 and L5 in 09' and yes I still have pain but not like I used to. I still have some nurabness on the bottom of my feet and nerve pain to my left toes and sciatic pain in both legs and for that I'm on Methadone. Prior to surgery I couldn't get off the couch much or walk much and didn't have much of a life as I do now except for an issue with my foot! Go figure! I think most of my nerve issues stem from prolonging my surgery for one and the other from my idiot surgeon who admitted to "strumming" my nerves while he had my back open. He didn't actually believe my back was that bad until he actually saw how inflamed the nerves were and he couldn't resist himself and strummed them! He said they were as thick as spaghetti! I would have done it again though, the surgery I mean.

how are you going now ?? still the same or getting better..i guess the best part of this health board, is that your not alone in your frustration, pain, boredom & losing the plot sometimes.... i could go on, but....stay positive, read some motivation books or something, that makes you feel good about yourself...im still in pain post op 7 months, but i know people that are ok after 6 to 8 weeks..just take it easy on yourself as everyone is different..take care

Hi Alan,
heat patch an adhesive pad you adhere to your back, over a singlet (not on bare skin), put it on your back, where the problem is eg L3/4, the product i use is the brand unten, (all others dont last, this one works for about 12 hours )which my chemist ordered in for me....i suffer sciatica and am recovering from back op..sometimes its my only relief ..good luck.. ps; its about $4.00 per pack
