How long should I wait before getting fertility test?

I have been with my husband for 3 years married for about a year and a half. We have decided to start really trying for a child. We have custody of his 5 year old daughter and want to have our second before she is too old. He is 31 and I am 26. I had been on birth control for 10 years (Ortho Novum 7/7/7). I stopped taking the birth control after we were married and was "just not preventing". We have actually been trying though for about 6 months. I know that there is no way to rush it and I know about watching my cycle for when I am ovulating. I know that he is fertile because he has a daughter.. but should I go ahead and get tested? I don't want to jump the gun.. any advice is much appreciated. My friends are no help they all had their first kids 5 years ago and now have 2 and 3 kiddos...

You can get tested now, there's no reason not to. Some doctors won't test until you've been trying for a year, so if I were you I would just tell the doctor you've been trying since you've been married. That will get the ball rolling. Another reason to consider this option is that a lot of insurance companies will charge more if it's been less than a year. It's not an outright lie--you haven't been using any birth control for a year and a half.
