How long should front discs last on an 53 reg Ford Fiesta?

At MOT they failed due to excessive wear, although they worked fine, no noise or vibration and only 43k on clock but i am the third owner and drive sensibly i can't rule out boy racers being the previous owners and giving them a hard time.

43 k on front discs is reasonable. Rears will probably go for 60 k to 70k.
Excessive wear means they have worn so thin as to be unsuitable - it is perfectly normal.
Even at 43 k things will wear out on a car. Depending on how well it has been driven the clutch could go soon or last another 50000.

Unfortunately some drivers buy a car and think nothing like this will ever happen - but it does and its supposed to.

43k is very good for discs, with hard braking they can go at 15 or 20k, Fords seem to go through front discs quite quickly. The problem is when they wear they become thin and distort because the heat builds up from the pad application when you push the pedal. If you leave a worn disc you begin to notice a wobble through the pedal after while. You will need new pads as well when you change the discs.

They will, or should, have measured the thickness of the discs. Ford stipulate the minimum thickness. If you know the figure, from a Ford dealer or Haynes Manual, you can use a micrometer to check them yourself. 40,000 miles sounds about right anyway and as said it is always linked to your driving style. If you can, buy Ferodo discs and pads as these will equal or better the braking performance when the car was new.

Not down to time but mileage and driving habits , . So have them done .. and they will probably last a lot longer with you as the driver , But 43k in 6 years isn't bad ,
