My fusion was done many years ago. Six years is about the time that things can start to go downhill again. That was my experience and it is a common one.
Hi
To be honest mine was done 12/07 and I haven't fused yet and there is already a mild disk bulge in my L4, & L5. But everyone is different, so don't let this bring you down cause many recover with much sucess.
I had my fusion in 1993 and my back is doing quite well! Sure i have some occasional aches and have had xrays on occasion to make sure all is well - but my orthopedic spine surgeon said right now - 15 years later - all is well.
There's really no way to predict this. It depenRAB on your particular problem, how well you fuse, how well you baby your back in the future, and probably genetics. And who knows what else. It could be anywhere from a few weeks to the rest of your life.
Please remeraber, too, that the majority of people do fine with this surgery and get their lives back; they aren't hanging around this board! You need to take our answers with a grain of salt! We are mostly the ones who had further problems.
Statistically, you have a good chance for a better quality of life with this surgery. I wish we could give you guarantees, but there aren't any. Keep educating yourself and asking questions, then make the best decision you can and don't look back.
Blueatlas (Emily) you always give great advice...thank you..
Even though I've had some slight problems if I HADN'T had the surgery I would not have been able to stand at all (couldn't stand for more than a minute w/out SEVERE pain, the nerve compression I had was awful prior to surgery) and now I can stand for a few hrs..Also I walk a mile or two every day..
twinges and nerve discomfort here and there but 80% improvement...
Just educate yourself as Emily says and don't expect a total miracle just some very good relief and your life back...
