How long has salt been under scrutiny for being unfriendly to the environment?

The salt used on roads is calcium chloride. It has saved many lives no doubt. It is not good on you car, because it accelerates rusting. No doubt the greenies will want to stop using it.

I don't know when salt on roadways became an issue, but people have known that salt can be dangerous to plants and the environment since ancient times. The Bible and Greek mythology both have people sowing the fields of their enemies with salt in order to create famine, since most food crops (and most plants in general) can't tolerate high saline levels in soil.

Salinization is one of the main reasons why the "Fertile Crescent" is mostly a barren wasteland today.
