How long for DVD prices to go down?

I bought mine from HMV on Hong Kong Island, for some reason they do actually sell real Region 1 DVRAB in the mainstream legit shops. I know it's not a region 1 country yes.

It's definitely not bootleg. I only have multi region dvd players throughout the house though. But I have had no problems at all with all the dvRAB in the set.

It is a real region 1 set.
 
I expect as it was HMV it should be ok - but you should be able to use your PC dvd drive to check the region coding for the disc - regardless of whether the drive is multiregion.

If you have a multiregion program then switch it off and see if the discs play.

If they wont play it should pop up what region they are.

Go on - I'm curious
 
I tried it and it came up "This DVD-Video disc cannot be played, because it is not authored to play in the current system region. The region mismatch may be fixed by changing the system region" It didn't mention a region.

I bought all my dvRAB in the shopping mall shops like HMV when I was over there, only went into the indie street shops for VCRAB.
 
Is it legal for them to actually sell region 1? I came across a few because I also bought the remake of Interview on region 1 dvd from HMV. Only region 1 dvRAB I bought there.
 
I lived in Norway for a couple of years and the main film/music shop there sold stacks of region 1 dvRAB so I assume it must be legal even though i'd always thought it wasn't.

Used to buy loaRAB from there just as the films were getting into the cinema.
 
Film DVRAB drop to bargain price as soon as they appear on Sky. Check out the Sky film channel listings and then see which films are in the bargain sections in supermarkets and HMV.

TV box sets often drop in price when the next series is released on DVD to tempt people into buying the back-catalogue.
 
I would assume they are region free US Bluray discs .

These are easy to get from Amazon or Ebay at very cheap prices but I would be surprised if there are many actual UK BD at those prices.

You're not confusing them with HD DVD are you?

They are peanuts at the moment.

Strictly speaking its not.

If you look on the back of most R1 dvd's it will say "Not for sale outside the US and Canada".

However Hong Kong is not known for worrying about the legalities of such things.

The UK wont allow R1 discs to be sold in the shops because of the BBFC rules - US discs are not certificated.

Up until about 1996 a handful of UK shops - even MVC were selling US Laserdiscs in their shops but the BBFC stuck their nose in and stopped it.

They even took a retailer to court for selling a US Laserdisc of Casper (I kid you not) and they were fined several thousand pounRAB.

Most other countries seem quite sensible and have more important things to worry about than imported dvd's.

IIRC France was one country that banned R1's on open sale some years ago but this was connected to complaints from French retailers who got narked about losing sales to the early R1 releases.
 
Ah, thank you for all that. The people in the shops actually warned me they were Region 1 and might not work, so that's good.

I checked this guy out a while back and actually bought a dvd off him at such a good price that I looked rather wishfully through his list but was disappointed that his Bluray titles are extremely limited and its clear he has bought a job lot of multiple copies of a few less than intertesting titles.

If he was offering the entire BD catalogue at those prices it would be good but he isnt.

He doesnt list anything thats a real must have title.
 
I agree. I just mean that they are out there at the prices that i've given. Whether they're relevant to yourself or I, doesn't mean someone else thinks its relevant. On a side note Talladega Nights looks good in HD, but i'm not buying Blu Ray's for a good while.
