how long does it usually take?

i had a job interview this back week for a position in a pharmecutical warehouse which i thought went pretty well. anyway the interviewer told me that a decision would be made in a week or two because they have to do a background check and then they have to take a drug test. my question is how long does a background check that? does the company do the background checks themselves or do they "outsource" them to someone else? ty
