my dad wants to take a 100 mile bike ride. He's never ever rode a marathon and i don't think he can. Hasn't prepared for it at all and has weak knees. Could he do this?

It can several months to get in shape for a ride like that. The biggest part is getting use to the saddle. It will take 2 or 3 week to get your butt use to ridding long enough to start getting in shape.

He will want to practice pedaling at a high cadence 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. The best thing is to ride for distance and not speed. Pedaling slow and mashing on the pedals will kill your legs quickly and it takes a long time to recover.

Cycling is good for the knees and will help strengthen them if done right. No mashing on the pedals and the correct saddle height are important.

He needs to ride every day and go for a long ride one or twice a week. He needs to work up to 60 mile rides before the century ride.

I would say that it would take a day or two. It's just a one day ride so really he just needs some sunscreen, comfy gloves, a riding rain suit in case he hits some rain, water and a good riding jacket. I know older guys who take all kinds of trips. If he takes several pit stops to get up and walk around he should be fine.

there is no such thing as a bike 'marathon'

if he doesn;t have a lot of saddle time, he will be very sore in the butt, and that might be the thing that makes him quit before it;s over

if he isn;t very fit, he won;t be able to pedal for 6-9 hours

weak knees, probably won;t matter

wle.
