How Long Does It Take For Muscle To Heal After Surgery???

:confused: I HAD DISCKECTOMY ON 1-9-05 AND AM STILL EXPERIENCING BACK PAIN AT THE INSICION SITE AND IT FEELS DEEP. SURGERY WAS AT L5/S1, AND I KNOW I HAVE A SCAR TISSUE PROBLEM. THE QUESTION IS THIS-HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE CUT MUSCLES TO HEAL?? IT SEEMS LIKE 4 MONTHS SHOULD BE LONG ENOUGH!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY AND ALL REPLIES! :cool:
 
Thanks Everyone For Your Replies!! My Surgeoun Is A Spine Specialist And Did Not Ask Me About Scar Tissue Before Surgery. My Scar Tissue Is Replacing The Herniation At L5/s1, And I Have Not Returned To Work Since 11-06-04. Pain Still Radiates Down The Back Of The Right Leg With Pain In My Lower Back. I'm Taking Celebrex, Neurotin, And Vicodin, And Still Can't Take A Full Step!!!!!

I know every time I see a Dr. they tell me its muscle spasm's . I say whatever ! After surgery over a year ? Bull,, I knew I wasnt crazzy. Now there saying I have a broken Pedical screw in my back. BUT its not hurting anything. " YEAH RIGHT ) These Dr.'s around home here must be on oxycottin themselves. You'll probably have pain the rest of our lives. Sorry for the sour note, But I believe that now. Take care Homeboy. :cool:
 
It can take a couple of months or longer...and it will take longer if you do things like lifting or vacuuming, etc. You need to be walking, slowly increasing the distance as you tolerate it. Long perioRAB of sitting should be avoided as well. You have to remeraber, those muscles were cut open and pulled apart...there are stitches deep within and this takes time to heal.

Dealing in Pa. My second surgery at L4 was in late Oct. and i am still having deep pain at incision site. Most everything i've read or heard regarding these types of procedures is that due too previous scar tissue, you can have lingering, constant pain for up to a year. I'm trying to be as proactive as possible. Walking, streching, and exercising are the best long term remedy. Getting a second opinion from another specialist is a good idea also. My GP just gave me referals for a second opinion from a Neuro and for pain managment so i can be more active without suffering while i continue to heal. Good Luck :)
 
IA with Carol it does take a while. While I had marked improvement in other areas fairly quickly; leg weakness etc. I had pain at my incision for about five months and it did feel pretty deep. To be honest, I still have lingering pain at the sight .. but it is tolerable. I agree with Carol; avoid a lot of bending :nono: and so forth and really focusing on walking. I have found walking to be the most therapeutic things I do. Have you started Physical Therapy? That may help, too. Please keep us posted on how you are doing!! :angel:

I have pain all thru my lower back, hips and left leg.It hurts the most in my left hip and leg. I have trouble walking down stairs. The Doc has me on Tramadol / Neurotin / skelaxin /Mobic
all these do is make me drowsy. :yawn:

Everyone heals at a different rate, and too, it depenRAB on how long you had already suffered with the disc crushing a nerve and how extreme the pressure was. So many things can affect the injury and thus the recovery.

You mention you have a scar tissue problem. I hope you knew this ahead of time and insisted that the surgeon use Adcon-L or one of the other anti-scarring gels to inhibit internal scar tissue growth. Most good surgeon will ask in advance if you have a scarring problem.

At four months, with a three level fusion, I was flying high, but to repeat again from other posts, I have a fantastic spine specialist. If you continue having problems, might it not be worth your while to search for one (if yours is not a spine specialist) or another one (if yours is) in your area and seek another opinion? Nothing wrong with you taking positive action to find out why you are not better, especially if your doctor isn't reacting to your concerns.

Hope you see noticeable improvement soon. If not, get that other opinion. Either way, let us know how you are doing.

I had back surgery (spinal fusion) a year and a half ago, and just recently have noticed that occasionally I get bruises around the scar and accross the area of the scar. I have heard that it is probably scar tissue but other then going to the touchy feely Dr. how esle can I find out what the bruises are from.
