When I used to get acid reflux, it would usually last a couple of hours. Typically, I would just be starting a meal that included some type of meat. I would take a few bites and then BOOM! the acid reflux would start coming up my throat.
If I acted fast enough and was alone, I could sometimes stick my finger down my throat and get my self to vomit up what was causing the acid reflux response. Otherwise, once the reflux reaction started, it would last a couple of hours. If I was at work, I would have to leave and go home. I very rarely ate with other people, because I never knew when I would get the acid reflux reaction and wanted to be alone so I could try to vomit up what I just ate in peace.
However, my doctor recently gave me a food chart (see my other post) that I now follow to avoid acid reflux. When I was first experimenting with the food chart, I found that watermelon was good to chew on/eat during the middle of an acid reflux reaction. Even if I couldn't swallow at first, the watermelon juice would slowly push the acid back down my stomach to the point where I could eventually swallow again.
Now, I eat tons of alkaline fooRAB and only get little bits of acid reflux occassionally when I eat something sugary like chocolate or a donut. Luckily for me, one of my favorite fooRAB is watermelon and I eat it like candy to keep the acid reflux away. I've also added sweet potatoes, onions, and various other melons to my diet.
I feel much less anxiety now that I know what was causing my acid reflux and that I can keep it away by eating fooRAB that I enjoy.
