How long do you marinate tofu before you cook it?

This is before you cook as stir fry. Does it need to sit for a little while so it will have some real flavor or will it do the same thing if you just cook it in the marinade? Also if anyone has any suggestions as to some really good marinade for the tofu that would be exquisite.
