How long do you have to wait for a film to come out on DVD?

I remember about ten years ago or so, you'd have to wait about a year or so for a film to come out on video as it was then.

Now it seems that the film is in the cinema for about a month, two months at most and then about a month after that its out on DVD. Is it just me or do films come out on DVD/Video sooner now??

Well I think the average waiting time for a DVD too come out is about 5/6 months from it being at the cinema.

Sometimes they do come out quicker tough and sometimes they take longer.

1 example of being longer is little britain series 1 DVD'S First started 2003 sometime....dunno when exactly......that didnt come out on DVD to say september or october whenever it was.

Yeah I tend to buy more Region 1 DVD than Region 2 ones as they tend to be released much sooner because of the delay with the UK release of some films!
The release of T.V series on DVD is completely random so the example of little britain doesnt really count as it could be 6 months to a year before they are released!
The basic rule does seem to be about 5 or 6 months after the cinema release but that has been getting a lot quicker recently. Sometimes like this time of year they tend to release the DVD a bit early to catch the Christmas market!
I think Region 1 DVD are the way to go though if you really want a film as I have already got a copy of Dodgeball on DVD which isnt out in the UK on DVD till the end of January. Also I have got the Hellboy Directors Cut which still hasnt got a UK DVD release date despite being out in the USA for about 2 months. The normal version of Hellboy on DVD isnt out untill January in the UK. So it definatly Region 1 for me unless its a world wide DVD release date!

Movie companys make more money from DVD sales then at the cinena, thats why sometimes a movie may bomb at the cinema but get special treatment on DVD, like Pitch black that went onto be a cult movie thanks to DVD, it will probably get to the stage when its released on DVD and at the cinema at the sametime.

Yeah as we have seen with Elf this year which wasnt realised on DVD untill a year after its cinema release. Also Bad Santa wont be out on DVD untill next christmas even though the Region 1 DVD is already out now!

One of the quickest cinema to DVD releases in America is the Ben Affeck film Surviving Christmas(which is a good film) 1 day short of 2 months. Released 22 Oct 2004 on DVD 21 Dec 2004. Bad Santa is on Region 1 DVD already because it was in American cinemas Christmas 2003.

Sadly our DVD player will not play Region 1 DVD's, only Region 2, so it's well annoying having to wait for something to be released on Region 2.
