how long do you have to wait after sex to recieve an accurate result from a STD test?

I had sex yesterday and i have now found out that the guy supposedly has had sex with over 40 girls, i asked if he had any STDs and of course he said no but i want to make sure, how long should i wait to get tested for STDs to get accurate results?
