I am making pot roast for a gathering on saturday. I usually cook a 1-2 lbs roast for about an hour or so. But this is a 4.5 roast. I have never cooked one this big before. How long should I cook it for?

The norm is 3 hours at 325 f. I like to stir my pot roast around from time to time. I like to season and brown the meat well beforehand and I like to add a can of beef stock

this isn't a smarty-pants anwer -- but: you cook it till it's done! the thing is, you want to cook the roast to a temperature. the thing to do is get a probe thermometer and check it every 40 minutes or so. you can get a manual one from the supermarket for about $5, or spend $15-$20 on an electronic one. those ones are worth it! you stick the probe in, set it to a temp, and an alarm goes off when it's there.

rare is 120 to 125 degrees, medium rare 130 or so, medium 145 or so, medium well, 150.

put the probe in the the thickest part of the meat.

in general, it should take about 15 - 20 minutes per pound at 300 degrees for rare, and about 25 per pound for medium for a 5 pound roast. but it's still better to just stay on top of it with a probe.

You cant go wrong using a crock pot, you can make the whole meal in it rinse your roast, put it in the crock pot fill it half way with water, make sure you don't cover the whole roast but half way, then add some pepper, chopped up garlic, a whole onion, about 5 bay-leafs, about 2 table spoons of salt to make it tender, you can add your potatoes carrots and some celery, oh yeah don't forget some worshire and let it cook all day, when you use the crock pot your food will always come out great and you don't have to constantly check it just leave it alone and it will come out great. put in your roast around 9.30 and it will be done by diner time. good luck
