how long do dvd-r or dvd+r media discs last? Do they store the movies you put...

...on them forever or like 1-2yrs? HOW LONG WOULD THEY LAST IF KEPT IN PERFECT CONDITION W/O SCRATCHES? i heard someone say they only last a couple years like 2-4yrs...which doesn't make sense to me if I buy a dvd from the store it will last a lifetime why wouldn't the blank dvd's?
 
VHS tapes would stop working after a few years because their data code is variation in magnetism, which naturally is lost over time. Dvds of any sort are like records, their data is determined by variations in the material which being plastic, degrades way too slow to have an effect in a lifetime.
