using the ignoring technique? My puppy is howling and howling and crying and I ignore him completly I don't even look at him, did it take you a few days? Weeks?

You could try to get your puppy a small stuffed animal dog to put in the crate with her,it might make her feel a little more comfortable.

The reason she is whineing and yelping,is probably because she misses her litter mates. And probably feels lonely, and want's to be with you.

It may take a few weeks before she stops.

I don't have any clue, because I have never had any of my dogs do this. But, how long has the dog been in the crate? Crating is for times when you are not there, at night, and times when you cannot watch the puppy constantly. The pup should STILL be spending most of its time outside of the crate.

My guess is that your pup is in its crate too long.

It actually took my guy a couple of nights...then every so often there would be a random night he do it again but only for like 5 minutes.

What I found helped was I covered his crate with blankets - except the front door, I only half covered it and it seemed to calm him down a lot more and he has a much better sleep. Can your dog see out of all sides of its crate?

My 10 week old puppy took 3 nights before she stopped crying when we put her in her crate at bedtime. It might have helped that her crate was near our other dog's so she could see him and smell him at night and she attached to him really quickly.

If you train your doggie properly to LOVE his crate, he will not whine. You can't just throw a dog in a crate without teaching him. He has no idea what a crate is. Start out throwing some treats in the crate and let your dog go inside to get it. After trying that a few times, then throw a treat in the crate and shut the door. Give your dog another treat while in the crate with the door shut so he knows he's doing good, then open the door and let him out. Try that for a while. Put a few toys in the crate, and hide the rest, so whenever he wants to play, he'll have to go inside the crate to get one of his toys. The toys and treats will make him think the crate is a good place.

Whenever it's time for your doggie to be put inside his crate, make sure that a few toys are in the crate, and always give him a treat when he walks in his crate so he knows he's doing a good job. Eventually, your puppy will walk in his crate without even being made to. My dog sometimes goes to his crate just to nap. Dog crates need to be a comfort zone, not a time-out spot. Your doing good by not paying attention to him when he whines. Keep this up! If you give in, he'll just get what he wants, and will never learn to love his crate. If you teach him the way I explained, he will hardly ever whine in the beginning, and eventually love his crate.

Dogs are social animals and like to be around the family, try turning his crate to where he can see you or your family and let him sleep (in his crate) in your room, because if he feels lonely this might help. Also dogs are den animals and after they get used to their crate, will find it as a place of comfort and security.

After three weeks of a whining, scratching, howling, puppy during the night, I eventually gave up and she has slept in my bed ever since. I'm not saying this is the best option by any means, but thats how long I could take it!
