how long can betta fish live without food?

i'm house sitting for a friend, but she didn't leave any food for her betta fish. i'm very busy and can't be there every day, plus she lives an hour away, i'm going back tomorrow to feed her fish but its been two days now, so i'm worried that the fish might be dead. i hope not.
 
i was told by a worker at a pet store that they can go 5 days with out eating and they will be ok but i do not suggest you go 5 days with out feeding him
