I've been trying to follow a GERD diet but have had a few slip ups. The weird part is sometimes when I've eaten fooRAB that are supposed to cause reflux I've felt fine. Other things that shouldn't bother my stomach do. One day I had double noodle soup and crackers and it made my stomach hurt and my chest ache. I've had similar experiences eating a meal of baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and carrots. Also apples seem to bother me. I've definitely been making sure to not over eat. FooRAB I've been avoiding are chocolate, citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, caffeine. My doctor had said come back in a week (which would be 4 more days now), if I wasn't feeling better, and he'd schedule an upper endoscopy. That is not something that I want to do unless absolutely necessary so I'm going to try to be patient and give the medicine time to work. Thanks for your response!

I've been suffering with a burning throat 24/7 for over one year now....I am at my wits end!!! I was diagnosed with GERD by my GI...but I kept saying I had no heartburn...just a burning throat....doctors thought it was due to stress and I kept telling them NO, GERD is what stresses me. My life is perfect otherwise....great family, frienRAB and job...no STRESS...anyhooo...just last week I went to see an ENT resident who scoped my throat and he saw it was all red and irritated and he put me on Prevacid two times a day. They said I have LPR....It's been about 1.5 weeks and my throat is still in pain. How long before I start feeling some difference.....I've also tried all kinRAB of natural stuff and nothing seems to work...there has to be some point where I will start feeling some kind of relief no??? It can't be this painful for the rest of my life...pls somebody give me some hope here because right now I am failing to see the light and this is not good for me at all. I just want to be normal again..or at least start feeling better....when can I expect to see relief????

Thanks.

That is so nice to hear that your doing well!!! Its nice to know there is light at the end of the tunnel!!! I have been on nexium for a week not a ton of improvement but some!! Its so nice to know that you can eat and and drink fun stuff eventually Mine started with the feeling of something stuck on the left side of my throat and phelm comes and goes I finally found a ent said it is silent reflux!!I think mine started because I was a smoker but I quit one month ago!! So I think It will help also that I'm not smoking I have not noticed any tigger with fooRAB!!!Are you still doing well!!?? I noticed this was a older post just seeing how you are doing!!! any advice would be great!!! I take both my pills at the same time 80 mg nexim in morning!!

Thank you for your suggestions. I've been following a GERD diet but have had a couple slip-ups. I'm going to have to a more strict approach and maybe start trying some different things that you all have mentioned. This is day 22 on the Nexium which I started taking on Feb. 11th. I definitely thought by now I would have noticable improvement but the last couple days have actually been worse than when I started taking PPIs 6 weeks ago. Honestly, I'm trying to be patient but it's a struggle. Had my gallbladder removed Dec. 9th and I thought it would solve all my problems...wrong! The GB is gone so no use in second guessing but I don't think it was my problem all along. It sucks that I'm now making payments on the $1200 I owe for the surgery, after the insurance paid their part, and I feel worse than I did. How could I go for 26 years with no medical issues, other than the occasion strep throat or sinus infection, to this in less than 7 months? It's ridiculous and depressing. I want to know what is going on. My appointment with the gastroenterologist is on March 17 which currently feels like years from now.

Bentleys - You're right, this is very frustrating. I'm sure it's probably the same for you because to me it feels like this is completely out of my control. It would be so great if this were something where you could just make lifestyle changes and it would go away but that's not happening for me. Please let me know what you find out from the doctor. Hopefully you and I both will get some answers and start feel better real soon. Take care!

You may wish to talk to your doctor about switching to another PPI. I originally took one called Zegerid which did nothing for me. It was then switched to Aciphex and I could start seeing/feeling results in about four days. It seems like two weeks is a long time to not feel any improvement whatsoever.

Hope you feel better soon.

Today has been a rough day. I'm seriously starting to worry and freak out a bit. Maybe that's only making my problems worse but my chest/upper abdomen, I guess you would say sternum continues to ache. My chest feels tight, my stomach is tender to the touch, and I swear everything feels weird up to my throat. It's really annoying and is all I can think about. I keep wondering what is really wrong with me. Is this something that I'm going to have to continue to deal with? Will I ever feel like my old self again? I feel as though I'm having worse days now with this than I was when I started taking the Nexium. It's 2 weeks until my appointment and I hate waiting. I'm tired of having to deal with this and seriously just feel like crying.

Silver....remeraber I told you it takes a long time. It took 3 month before my ENT increased my PPI to 2 a day. Then it took at least another 4 weeks and bingo it was healed. Hang in there. I wish you were on Nexium. It is the best healing PPI out there. the strongest as well.
You also said your stress started after loosing a loved one. This all took time to evelope after that and it doesn't dissapear over night. I drink coffee and wine now. I can eat chocolate. I still continue to have the head of my bed raised which helps to keep down the acid that comes up in your throat.

Well, it's an irksome fact that there's often no rhyme or reason as to why we reflux more on some days than on others. Most of us don't have clear triggers and that makes avoiding trouble quite difficult. In general I feel much better when I eat less overall and when I don't eat at all after about 6 or 7 pm, so I try to stick with that, but as for avoiding certain fooRAB, that's just a guessing game with me. You say apples bother you; others here say apples are the magical cure for reflux! LOL It all seems so random to me that I'm currently just trying to avoid obsessing about it.

Hi tbonnexxx
I was wondering what your symtoms were before you started the meRAB? Do you have lpr or gerd? I have been on nexium for a month but my main symtoms are something stuck on the left side of my throat and mucus in my throat sore throat will come and go on left side as well and sinius mucus!! The thing in my throat seems smaller at times but then it will come back, was wondering if your symptoms came and went while you were on the meRAB? When did you notice that it was really working? I don't know if i should switch meRAB or not? Are you feeling better are you able to eat things again the things they say to stay away from? I does not seems to matter what I eat!! I don't have regular heart burn all the time but my throat feels hot sometimes, its seems like i notice the hot throat since starting the meRAB? any info would be great!!!

Hey Silver how are you feeling?
Are you doing any better!! And if so when did you notice it was really working? would be great to hear form you

I was taking 20 mg of Prilosec per day for 2 weeks with no improvement. Now I'm taking 40mg of Nexium once a day. This is the 3rd day of Nexium and nothing has changed yet. I know it takes time but my doctor wants to do an upper endoscopy if things aren't improving in the next few days. Glad you are starting to see some improvement. Maybe it won't be long until the same happens for me. Thank you for taking time to respond to my message. While I wish that none of us were having these problems it is nice to be able to hear from people that know what you are going through. Thanks and I hope you feel better soon!

Bentleys - Sorry for being so long winded. Unfortunately this is the second time around for me. First time was heart-stopping heartburn - stayed away from the esophagus. Tried everything up to prilosec and then finally nexium (4 years ago). 40mg took 30+ days and started working days before my endoscopy. Of course the doctor saw gerd but everything was fine. I was able to switch back to prilosec (thankfully for cost) and lasted up to now. This time, after trying to cut back (advice of GP) to 20 mg just before last Thanksgiving, I had a couple small breakthrough episodes that antaciRAB took care of but caught what I thought was the same bug as others I work with. Woke up heaving and had a day of 102 fever. From that point on I started having the sore throat (left side and felt burning when breathing), swollen throat and would switch to the feeling of lump in the back - you would feel when swallowing. At this point it was mild but I had increased back to 40mg. I screwed up by trying to switch to prevacid because I was afraid the prilosec had stopped working... big mistake. Now a month later and having my GP get the original heartburn back in control with Kapidex (20 days of samples - bid dollars for prescription), it got most of the throat soreness and swelling down to a low level that would increase and decrease day to day, he suggested going back to nexium since it was tested to be most effective, and sent me back to the specialist. I was also doing antaciRAB after meals and when waking at night to keep the burning down. I've been back on Nexium for a week and have another endoscopy scheduled for next week. Specialist walked in, asked a couple questions, muttered "it should have gone away right away", and scheduled the test.
I'm convinced it all started with the heaving while I was sick. I've also found I need to sleep in my lazyboy, sitting mostly upright since when I lay down, my throat goes sore instantly (I really miss my bed). Doing this I wake with the slight soreness and go through many days without the soreness and only the slight swelling - but I do have days where it gets worse. So yes, similar to yours, it seems like it is getting better then I have a real bad day. I also found leaning to the right helps prevent the soreness on the left, which is opposite of what is said for heartburn. Another thing that has helped is once I start feeling the soreness increase, take a hit form the antaciRAB (generic tums and or generic prevacid). Taking mylanta (generic again to keep cost down - Walmart is great) just before bed helps keep a layer of protection (simethicone?) on top and limit burning at night. I now keep my larger meal in the middle of the day and stick to bannanas, pears, celery, apples... all known to keep acid down, at night. Also, pepto bismal tablets are a staple when I start getting gas since that seems to push the acid up into my throat and start things burning. I'm able to keep it to a small roar and more of an irritant now and hope the endoscopy will at least send the doctor on a direction. I'm also hoping the nexium will at least start working better better over time as it did the first time. On the positive side, I had a large dinner at a restaurant, spicy ribs and all the fixings, last night. Took my mylanta before bed. I expected to wake in agony, but I slept like a baby and woke with only a slight sore/swelling throat.
If you can get things at least under control, it seems like you can enjoy eating many of the things you use to. I had a very spicy Mexican meal the other day and I'd swear it actually better that afternoon, but that seems like playing with fire... had the antaciRAB very close. I've been reading about IPR and hoping once I get the endoscopy that it may be something as simple as that, and that eventually like the first time the nexium works better over time. good luck.

Hi Tobonexx

I have been on 80mg a day and i might be seeing some improvement but still have the feeling of something stuck in my throat, though it seems a little smaller I have been on it for a month!! Did you say you have lpr or gerd!I have been having this for over 4 yr on and off no one could figure it out!!! But they are saying silent reflux, It does not matter what i eat !!! So maybe it is just gonna take time since i have had the symtoms for so long!! what are you taking now?? Did you like nexium best? hope your doing well

What caused my LPR? I actually think in my case it might've been caused by a virus, but of course medical research doesn't support this (yet). Mine came on suddenly and immediately on the heals of a virus both my husband and I weathered last Fall. We both developed mild chest pain and ended up having basic heart tests. It was WEIRD. My husband was back to normal within a month but my chest pain got worse and spread to involve my mouth and throat, leading me to finally see an ENT who diagnosed this as LPR. I'm not even convinced I'm suffering from LPR; who really knows? I suspect viruses and bacteria cause all sorts of problems in our bodies that doctors don't yet understand. Remeraber all of those years when doctors were convinced ulcers were caused by stress but it now turns out ulcers are caused by bacteria and are now treatable as such? This LPR beast...hmm, I think we have MUCH to learn about what makes the upper and lower esophogeal sphincters malfunction. I think we do not yet understand it and this might explain why there are such mixed results with lifestyle and dietary changes and even the medications currently "in vogue." So that's my soapbox for tonight.

That's what I need to do to, quit obsessing. I have been making sure not to eat too much. I stop before eating before I'm full because if I eat too much I don't feel well. Also, I've been making sure not to eat after 7 o'clock and not to lay down for at least 3 hours after eating. Does it seem sometimes like you really have no control over this at all? That's how I'm feeling.

Rose do you have lpr or gerd? I have been on nexium for almost a month, some days are ok and then bad and even with following the diet!!! Just wondering if they should switch my ppi??

I wish your doctor had tried 40 mg/day on the Prilosec and given you a few more weeks; you might've seen improvement. Prilosec (which is available in a generic) is way cheaper than Nexium. Doctors are SO quick to prescribe Nexium. In any case, you're on it now and I'd give it more time. Have you also made some diet and lifestyle changes?

So sorry you are not seeing improvement. I know how discouraging it is to have even a bad day, and you are having lots of them in a row!

The Nexium should have definitely started working by now. I think you should see some improvement in four or five days or at least feel you are heading in the right direction.

Nexium may be the wrong PPI for you for whatever reason. Can you call the doctor's nurse and ask what to do? What about being prescribed Carafate to help coat your throat and esophagus?

Back when I started in this rollercoaster, Prilosec took the burn away but gave me a horrible pain in my gut, so much so I thought I had an ulcer. Then, I was prescribed Zegerid which did nothing at all for the heartburn. In fact, I felt I was taking nothing. The third one was Aciphex which worked very well as far as symptoms go. I know not all PPI's are the same and all work a bit differently for different people. I have a friend who was tried on several before she hit on Protonix. But I know it is miserable to feel this way and to feel you have to wait for two more weeks to see a doctor for fifteen minutes. I would encourage you to call the doctor's nurse tomorrow and let her know how badly you feel to see if they can prescribe something to soothe your esophagus and stomach at least, or maybe they can move up your appointment.

Liquid Gaviscon helps me a bit. I also drink Aloe gel and honey. I think you mentioned you have tried several or all of these remedies.

Hope tomorrow is a better day.

Rose

Thanks for responding. First I was taking Prilosec and now Nexium. The Nexium was prescribed for 30 days and I only have 10 pills left now. Some days are a little better than others so I keep taking it hoping that just maybe it'll start helping. The doctor I've been going to is the general surgeon that removed my gallbladder in Dec. He had told me to come back if I wasn't seeing some improvement after the first week of being on Nexium but I decided to just go to a gastro doc instead. I have an appointment in a couple weeks.
