How long after ovulation can you take a pregnancy test?

I would like to know how long after ovulation can you take a pregnancy test.
I am on birth control pills and had trouble taking them like normal recently and I think I ovulated late in last week (Wed). I am to start my period in like 2-3 days so I think it is too early to take a pregnancy test now, so I just was wondering if for a chance that an egg was fertilized, how much longer do I need to wait? (Estimate)
I know some might say wait til your missed period well that could be soon and I dont think if I got pregnant from ovulating last week then it would be too early for Hcg to be produced if I dont get my period this week because it would only be a week after ovulation..
