How is the 'Lord' in this verse not evil? How can killing children and babies be 'good'?

This is what the Lord of hosts has to say: 'I will punish what Amalek did to Israel when he barred his way as he was coming up from Egypt. Go, now, attack Amalek, .... Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.' (1 Samuel 15:2-3 NAB)
So if god can do it and it is god, so can I? Or is god one of those: Do as I say, not as I do type of fathers?
So god punished the babies, children and animals because they were sinners? Makes sense now. I'm going to go kick me dog now, just like I will be.
