George Clooney plays Ulysses Everett McGill. "Ulysses" is the Latin version of Odysseus.
Everett, Pete, and Delmar are all seduced by sirens. Of course, in The Odyssey, the crew withstands the sirens.
Pete being "turned" into a toad is a nod to Calypso turning Odysseus' men into pigs.

in the opening credits, it specifically says it's based on the odyssey, obviously
and also at the beginning, there's a line from the actual odyssey: O Muse! Sing in me, and through me tell the story..."
the blind guy on the railroad is the blind prophet in the book
everett's wife's name is penny. like a modern nickname for penelope. (odysseus's wife's name)
penny tries to get another man because everett was gone (just like penelope did when she looked for 'suiters' in the book)
delmar calls the women that seduced him, everret and pete 'sirens' like in the book. because they sing to them and trick them into getting drunk. (kinda like when they drugged the crew in the book)
