Here we were again, driving down highway 32, 1am with no destination. My mom would always do this when she was manic. She’d haul me and my little sister Ellie out into our old, beaten down, rustic Toyota Camry, and just go, until she was done snickering at the voices swimming in her head. She’d rub my leg, giggling, saying “ Isn’t this fun Lucas?” eyeing me with her distant eyes ,while popping white cheddar popcorn she had bought from Wilson’s Corner Store. “Yes mom” I’d repeat again and again in a low voice trying to soothe her. Sometimes she would fall asleep while driving, and I would have to put my leg over her and drive us back home. When we’d get home she’d stumble up the stairs spilling popcorn all over the place as I‘d carry Ellie in my arms in to the house, laying her gently into her crib trying not to wake her from her deep sleep, this kid could sleep anywhere. Most nights after our random midnight runs I would go find my mom scattered out somewhere on the floor hugging whatever snack she had bought for that night, sometimes on a good night she would have made it to the bed in one piece.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love my mom. So what if she gets so drunk sometimes she can’t remember my name? So what if she smokes? She’s still my mom.
Luckily I found her lying atop her blue and white bed spread, her shoes kicked off in different directions, and the bag of popcorn cradled in her right arm. I swiftly grabbed the bag dodging any swings in the process, because she would like to try and eat in her sleep which usually made her wake up violently coughing, gagging, and sometimes throwing up which I was not a fan of. Heading back to my room I’d pick up every last piece of popcorn. Then I’d sprawl out on my bed in just my boxers inhaling the emptiness from the white ceiling above me hoping for sleep to come.
