How is it that escorts seem to dodge prositution laws?

I have always wondered if escorts are breaking the law when they have sex with their clients. It would seem to me that this blatant prostitution. Yet, I assume that the majority of escorts aren't actually escorts in the sense of escorting somebody on a date, but rather they are paid sexual companions. When escorts have sex with clients, do they violate the law or is their some sort of "loophole" that makes this activitity somehow legal?
