How is an automatic stay on wage garnishment applied?

I've had a wage garnishment applied to my last paycheck. I filed bankruptcy this afternoon. Will this put an automatic stay on the wage garnishment? Do I need to contact my payroll department & inform them of the bankrupcty filing? How will they know NOT to garnish future wages?

Nothing currently you can do about the garnishee - the court order is issued to
your company and you don't have any control over it - the bankruptcy court
can issue a stay and has the authority to do so - but you have no control over
when that will be either. When you filed your bankruptcy petition you listed
all your creditors and everyone you owed money to - they will get a letter
from that court as to the disposition of your case. Meanwhile contacting
your payroll department won't do any good.
