How important of a role does mercury have in astrology? Does it matter?

I notice people don't pay attention to mercury, here in Y!A's people skip it when putting a brief bit of the birth chart. I also learned that it should only be your sun sign or whatever's close to it. Does your mercury play less of a role in astrology than the rest of the planets?

My Mercury is in Cancer and 12th House and MercuryTrineJupiter. That's it.
