How important is the reference part of the U.S. Army application form?

There are parts of the application that says that I have to put down a reference that isn't a relative that i've known for at least 10 years. BUT I HAVE NOT KNOWN ANYBODY FOR THAT LONG!

Also it says I can't list any previous references and I already put all my friends down.

Anybody know if the reference part is important?
