How important is the name of the college you went to?

I am in the process of applying to colleges and I have a very competitive academic background. I can make it into some big name schools. But lately, I just feel like I'm doing something wrong by applying to all the big names. I was just wondering, specifically in engineering or actuary careers, if the school you went to makes as much of an impact as your skills.

On another note, will an engineering program at a big name really be worth $15,000 extra a year as opposed to a nearby state school? Or can I learn the needed things well enough without them?
