How important is it to be strict with rules and discipline?

I know some parents who even though they love their kids dearly are very strict with the punishment for breaking rules and never give their kids an inch. I was wondering if that is a good or bad way to raise a child.

I can see it one way as it being important for children to know their are limits, but does it hurt too much to cut them some slack and understand when they break certain rules they are just being kids or should you try to burn the idea into their head that they aren't going to be given special favors in life and each time a certain rule is broken there is going to be a punishment no matter what.

If I decide to parent someday I don't even know how I would decide to deal with it. Kids with parents who never have any rules can cause them to be undisciplined but parents who are very strict to the book sometimes cause depression and resentment to some children.
