How important is finite element analysis in industry/research? (Mechanical Engineering)?

Thinking of taking FEA as an elective (I'm Mechanical Engineering undergrad), but I'm not sure if it's a difficult course or not.

Would it be something useful to know as a Mechanical Engineer in industry? How about in grad school, doing research? (not sure which path to take yet, I'm a third year)
