it does help if you tag your images with an alt tag so that the search engine spider can then index the image as well when it crawls your site.
Images are good for end users - as it makes their experience interesting. If you stop using images. The end user might think ur site is boring and not return ever and may not want to refer ur site to their friends/peers.
