How Important are Ab Exercises in Burning Tummy Fat?

I've always heard that the best way to lose tummy fat is by doing cardio and that ab exercises don't do much.

I currently workout 3-5 days a week. Each time, i start with 40mins of cardio ( kickboxing ) then 40mins of sculpting exercises with 5 pound weights then finish off with another 20mins of cardio.

I've never really looked into ab exercises because i'm afraid that it'll make my tummy stick out.

So i guess my question is: how important are ab exercises when trying to lose tummy fat?

Btw, i'm 21, female. 5'2". 115lbs. I'm pretty small and my legs and arms are mostly toned. My tummy is the only area that i really need help in.
