Get a wheelset that does not have a low spoke count. 32-spoke wheels are not so fashionable anymore, but they are durable, and they're not even so heavy. However, I rode a pair of Ksyrium Elites for a couple of years, and I had zero problems. Those wheels rocked!
Personally, I ride a Zinn custom titanium, which explains my username. I run Shimano Ultegra components, and nothing has ever broken. My bike weighs in at about 20 pounds. I've toured and raced this bike, anything from time trials to criteriums to ultradistance.
If you buy a decent quality bike and you don't abuse it, it'll hold up just fine.
