how heavy can a rider be on a light weight road bike?

At 260 don't go for a "light weight" (unless you are using light weight is just a generic term for a road bike.) road bike, just get a regular model, save your money for extras.

Depends on how "lightweight" you want to go. As someone else pointed out - spoke count is important. So is a cassette vs. a freewheel hub. So is double walled rims vs. single walled rims. A cassette hub & double walled rims would be better for heavy loads. Compare the two bikes listed below. The Raleigh Sport is the lower end bike but will most likely hold more weight at $625 vs. the Raleigh Competition at $2600.

Visit a real bike shop in your neighborhood. Express your concerns. They'll fix you up with what's right.

Well, I've got you by an inch and five pounds. I don't think overall weight is an issue. Overall integrity is.

Get a wheelset that does not have a low spoke count. 32-spoke wheels are not so fashionable anymore, but they are durable, and they're not even so heavy. However, I rode a pair of Ksyrium Elites for a couple of years, and I had zero problems. Those wheels rocked!

Personally, I ride a Zinn custom titanium, which explains my username. I run Shimano Ultegra components, and nothing has ever broken. My bike weighs in at about 20 pounds. I've toured and raced this bike, anything from time trials to criteriums to ultradistance.

If you buy a decent quality bike and you don't abuse it, it'll hold up just fine.
