How has random breathalyzer testing worked for Ireland?
This is being proposed in Canada now and they point to Ireland and Australia as their proof that it works to reduce deaths. MADD says that Australia had a "23% drop in traffic deaths" once this was implemented.
What was the system in place before this was implemented? Were there any other changes which would also account for this statistic?
Honestly I don't see how this random breathalyser testing will reduce deaths as the current system is very good. The police have "RIDE" checkpoints and stick their head in every vehicle and if they smell alcohol or see any indication of alcohol consumption they then have the right to give you a breathalyser test. It's currently an offence to refuse.
I'm neither for nor against this but right now I'm feeling that this is just good optics from the current government.
