How has Gerard Butler become such a big deal?

I don't begrudge the guy at all, I really like him as a personality in fact, but how has he risen to become leading man in all of these movies? He doesn't seem to have followed the normal path that leading men go through.

He's been knocking about Hollywood since he was cast as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera but that wasn't a hit, neither was nearly everything else he has been in to my knowledge. Is it just '300' that's been a hit? Was that enough to give him this boost to leading man status? Or did I miss some huge profile raising cash raker that he was in? Or some critically lauded indie film which made people sit up and take notice?

Like I said, I really like the guy, I think he has great charisma on screen but I'm just a bit baffled that he's become so shit hot. I wish I could watch a film with him in that isn't a bit pants, and that his accent isn't all over the shop in too.

I think without 300 he wouldn't have the career he has today. He will be remembered for that role for some time until he does something of significance.:)

How has Gerard Butler become such a big deal?

Good question.

I don't think he is particularly attractive, nor is he a great actor. He struggles with accents and he seems to make one bad film after another.

he's becoming something of a joke. he has never made a single good film, just one terrible one after another

he can't act and he seems to have no charisma at all.

his face looks quite bloated too lately

he has that same appeal that jason statham brings to the table. women love em men wanna be em. same as harrison ford during the star wars indiana jones era.

btw im not gay.

I think he is blooming gorgeous, charming and funny, I could watch him all day talking! lol *sigh*....I really enjoyed his performances in the Ugly Truth, PS I Love You, Butterfly On A Wheel and Law Abiding Citizen....He is a decent actor tbf....xo

I don't get the fuss about him either. He's rather ugly to my mind, and has made no films as yet that I've been remotely interested in watching. And he's making rather a lot of them!

He's king leonidas.

That was badass.

But his contributions since have been disappointing to say the least, from the trailers of his latest film with jen its like his accent is all strange, his entire delivery is off.

I wasn't aware that he was a big deal, but I thought he was excellent in Law Abiding Citizen.

As for his accent being all over he place, once Scottish actors reach a certain status, they don't change their accents, no matter the nationality of the character they are portraying! :D

Don't get it either, but I haven't seen that many films with him in. Thought he was awful in PS I Love You - his accent was all over the place.

Eh? So why are'nt the cinema's full for one of his films?

He seems to be on the same projectory as Jude Law-flop after flop but the media would have you beleive he's this huge star with box office pulling power.

OK Sherlock Holmes was a hit, but that was more down to the subject matter and the leading man.

Butler's reputation seems to stem from 300-I did'nt see the movie but I believe it was good.

I saw him in 'Ugly Truth' and I didn't like him (in role) or the film. I was persuaded to give him a second chance in 'The Bounty Hunter'.....oh dear. The film is, in my opinion, quite poor generally but it took very little time for me to decide that I would never be a fan of Gerard Butler. I went with Mr K&C, who wanted to leave the cinema after 15 minutes, but we decided to stay for a little longer. It wasn't worth it.

He doesn't seem to retain much if any of his Scottish accent in his movies. I don't hear it anyway. And with him surrounded by Americans in movies you'd think it would stick out if he did use it. I'd crack up if he shouted in a movie to some American "Haw Jim!" in a thick Scottish accent lol.
