How hard is it to replace the Catalytic converter in a 2005 Ford Escape?

I took it to Mineke for a free inspection because i had someone that the exhaust system has a clog in it or something. Mineke to me that there are 3 possibilities in the system and that it would be 1500$ just for parts. They also cant tell for sure with the computer that they have because the check engine light isn't on. The guy told me to drive it till the light comes on. Well, I have to drive for work which wouldn't be a problem except I cannot go over about 30mph or uphill. There is a major loss of power. I would prefer to do the work myself because I hate paying labor costs but want to make sure that its doable if I buy parts myself. Thanks in advance for any advice
