How hard is it to add hand brakes to a cruiser bike with coaster brakes?

Look at the frame at the top of the forks and seat stays. If there is a hole in the cross member you can mount caliper brakes.

The kiddo prefers the caliper brakes, can I add them to a bike that didn't have them to start with? How much would that set me back & is it something that I would need to go to a bike shop to do? I've done light maintenance on bikes before... Thanks.
