How hard is general maintenance on a 2000-02 Mazda Protege?

I've owned Toyotas and I really liked being able to do the simple work myself. Are Mazda's hard to work on, or can oil, brakes, battery, plugs, lights, filters, and other general maintenance be done with out special tools or much of a hassle?
