How Fast Can damage happen from the burning?

Since I only noticed this last Sunday and 2 weeks ago I had burning but thought it was all from a sore throat/sinus infection, I didn't start medication until last Sunday. How fast can the damage occur. The burning was really bad earlier inthe week but does that mean there's already damage occurring? Does anyone have experience with this?
 
The damage that acid reflux can cause doesn't happen in a couple of weeks, and even long-term damage can usually be reversed with medication that gives the body a chance to heal.
 
Thank you for your answer. I feel relieved. I had this for several days and didn't realize that's what it was, then another day and then started on the Protonix. It's amazing how hot and burny the stomach can get, so I thought I had major damage done.

After 5 Protonix pills I feel 80% less burn and can start eating again.
