Cycling will not help your running but will help keep you cardiovascular fitness until you can run again. You want to pedal at a high cadence 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. It will be the same thing you do in running, pick a gear that gets your breathing to that point where it is fast and you can do for a long time.

You still want to run as much as you can and then switch to the bike. Cycling is very efficient, runners have the Marathon and cyclists have the Century (100 mile ride) I probably can do a Century but never a Marathon. I don't think I could run 2 miles.

i am a cross country runner but i have a recent back injury. i cannot run more that 3-4 miles without my back hurting but i should be running about 8-10 to get in shape for cross country and biking doesn't hurt my back. so what is the equivalent biking workout to a 8 mile run?

There isn't a straight equivalent of running versus bicycling, but I'd recommend at least thirty and probably more per day. The big advantage of bicycling compared to racing is that it can be a lot faster workout. The disadvantage is that you'll be working a different set of muscles so its value as a replacement for long distance running may be questionable.
