How far out can a mile-long object be detected?

Hypothetically speaking, if there were an object heading to Earth from outside the solar system, how far out could would it be before it was detected? For measure, let's say the object is a mile long by a half-mile high by a half-mile wide.
Albedo: hmm... I'd say it's about as reflective as aluminum
Radiofrequency Radiation: Not a whole lot. About as much as four or five radios would emit.
Heat Plume/Tail: It would have about a mile long heat tail.
Speed: 500,000 miles per hour
Trajectory: I have no Idea. :/

Okay, I'll fess up. It's an alien space-ship. I'm writing a short-story about an alien space-ship encounter.
