How far is the average American willing to walk without using a car or taxi?

Let's assume you're going somewhere BESIDES a supermarket so you won't be lugging 30 pounds of groceries back home.

Say you have to go to a bank, or to the post office, or the nearest library. How close to where you live would it have to be for you to not use your car or take a taxi?

It used to be nothing for me to walk four miles to work every day. My friends all couldn't believe it, because most of them wouldn't walk to the other end of the block. Unfortunately, now I must drive to work since it's 30 miles away.

I'd say most people today would drive if it was more than a few blocks.
