I'm just wondering wat is a good distance to ride bike from home to school, less than 1 mile, 1 mile, 2 miles, or even more than that? i'm thinking if it is more than 3 miles I should drive a car instead.

Is it really about the distance? In reality, it's all about the time you can manage to commute to school. 5 miles may seem to be a lot at the beginning but believe me, even if you were not in shape, you will build your stamina in no time and 5 miles will be easy distance after a couple weeks. I know people commute over 10 miles on bike to work everyday. It will definitely take longer than driving.

By the way, check if your area has public transportation as well. I would take a bus instead of driving a car myself.

Depends on your fitness level and your bike.
For me it is a little over 3 miles (one of my classes is about 5 miles away) each way, and even with an old bike (Schwinn Worldsport) and a lot of stop signs and somewhat bumpy terrain, it usually takes me 15 min for the 3 mile trek, about 25 for the 5 miles. Then again, I have been doing this 3 - 5 days a week for over 2 years.

The answer to your question depends on several factors. First, do you have a safe route to school? Bike paths away from traffic are clearly the best. Second, how much time do you have for your ride? Third, is your bike in good condition to make the ride? Fourth, are you in good enough condition to start these rides? Remember, with repeated rides you will get more fit, and your ride speed will increase while your ride time decreases. And lastly, is there a safe place to lock your bike up at school? Anytime you can ride a bike instead of drive a car you are helping the environment as well as improving your overall health.
