How educated a society are we?

You can judge the level of education in a society by the rate at which they seek out the most qualified doctors and lawyers. This speaks to an inability to master oneself and judge oneself.

That's a paraphrase of Plato. Do you agree with his means of measurement, and if so what does it say about the standards in modern America where the biggest debate is the health care crisis and the lawsuits pile up like so much garbage everyday?

I don't believe that our society is as educated as it would like to seem. We are oblivious to whats actually going on in the world. We are lazy and just believe whatever it is we are told. We would rather believe the news we hear on CNN or FOXnews or MSNBC or any other major broadcasting company. They feed us what they want us to think and believe...and we are; call it stupid or just to ignorate a society to see through it all.

It's our education system. Public Education is F.U.B.A.R.

College is less of a joke but still a joke in it's own right, deeming that a piece of paper determines the intelligence of it's owner; it does not.

People feel "special", they feel "obligated", when they are neither Special nor Obligated.

I think a better way to judge is to look at the average educational level of a country's citizenship and to look at the level of sophistication and civility of its society. Those that cling to old ways and its associated dogma are almost always less educated and less civil. Those that seek to grow and expand beyond what they are told is possible (by those that cling to the old) are more educated and more civil.....Less education creates a narrow tribal/national/exclusive perspective compared to more education which creates a broad global/universal /inclusive perspective.

We have the best private universities in the world.

But there are plenty of other countries that have better education systems.

I think it only says that Plato, as insightful as he may have been, lived in a very primitive archaic world compared to the tremendous hustle and bustle of today. His interpretations of society way have been startling, in difference, had he lived today, who knows?

The best doctors and lawyers will go to the society that pays them the most.

So the premise is bogus making the rest of your question meaningless.

I used to come to profound parallels like that back when I took mushrooms and acid. After I was done tripping (and had a good nights sleep (usually the next night damn you shrooms for keeping me up) I realized it was BS).

America is not any more educated then we were 50 years ago. We still have issues with kids dropping out of high school and unfortunately many inner city youth almost view ignorance as something that can be cool. We are quickly loosing ground to countries like China and India where education is highly valued and parents push their children to excel in their school work.
