I'm without a car, but I'm not going to let winter hold me down. All year I bike in rain and wind, and I want safe ice riding. I've rode 8 miles both ways in windy conditions with over 3 inches of snow on the street. That was on a crummy mountain bike, and I didn't fall once. But I had to bike at a quarter of my usual speed, and be paranoid about my balance and tire traction.
This year, I have a road bike and a better mountain bike, and I'm considering studded tires. I'd like to continue biking my average speed safely over snow and ice. Question is: If the snow melts and the street is bare, will it wear down the studs?
I'd rather not lay down $120 just to have the studs be temporary.
