How does your car act if your camshaft or camshaft sensor goes bad?

I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am it started running horrible a few weeks ago and someone told me the camshaft or camshaft sensor may have went bad and I was wondering if someone could tell me what the symptoms are for this problem
 
wouldnt start or run either way with either one bad so not a problem with it what about a tune up like a spark plug or plug wire or even a fuel treatment when was last time you had it tuned or service done
 
if the sensor went bad , a scan test will show it , most big parts stores will do this for free..ie parts america...auto zone...pep boys ...etc.
 
That "someone" better not be a mechanic because he has no clue.
But what exactly do you mean by running horrible?
There are dozens of answers if we don't know the details.
