The jimmy riddle expression was almost certainly based on James (or Jimmy) Riddle Hoffa, infamous Teamsters union leader and US organized crime figure, 1913-75, who would have featured in the British news as well as in the US from 1930's to his disappearance and probable murder by the Mafia in 1975. Cockney rhyming slang had, and still has, strong associations with the London crime culture and so the reference to a famous crime crime figure like Hoffa would have been an obvious origin of this particular slang term. James Riddle Hoffa was officially declared dead in 1983. His son James Philip Hoffa, born in Detroit 1941, is a labour lawyer and was elected to the Teamster's presidency in 1998 and re-elected in 2001.
