How does security in airports check your laptop/electronics/medications?

Flying out of town this week, I was wondering what they make you do with your electronics and laptops, etc. to get through security. I'll be bringing along my laptop, iPod, and DS, then there's of course my cell phone. Do these go in separate bins to be scanned, do they have to be turned on, or can some of them stay in my bag?

Also, I have some medications that need to come with me, what do I do with those? They're all in pill form so no liquids or anything. This will be the first time in a looong time that I've flown, and the first time ever with my laptop or any kind of medications. Thanks for any helpful info.

Your medications in pill form are fine to stay in your bag; if they're controlled substances like pain killers, I'd definitely recommend keeping them in a pharmacy bottle with the prescription info still stickered on, as a bag full of loose oxycontin could raise some eyebrows. The laptop should come out of your bag and go into its own bin with nothing else; large electronic items like DVD players should also go into their own bin but small items like phones or DS should be fine to stay in your bag. It doesn't matter if these things are turned on or off.
