how does releasing a phosphate group from atp provide energy for a cell?

I am unable to picture it.

So you have this molecule, and you are going to break off one of the phosphate groups, somehow this provides energy?

One would think it costs energy to do something like "break" something. Can someone explain this?

What is it that gives the "energy"?
